| Honest startups versus City bastards - the CGT conundrum
Analysis Why the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, had to propose altering capital gains tax (CGT) back in the autumn is pretty simple to explain. There was a certain amount of vociferous shouting (led by the Guardianistas, of course) that the sight of private equity barons paying less tax than their cleaners was a moral outrage that must be stopped. Few stopped to think that the very idea was itself absurd: a lower rate of tax, possibly, but they certainly weren't paying less tax either in total or as a portion of their total earnings. No matter, a band wagon was rolling and something must be done. The original problem was that Gordon Brown had brought in "taper relief". Without going into the sort of details that only an accountant could love, the idea was that if you invested long term in the future of a business you would pay a lower rate of CGT on your profits than if you'd made the same amount spivving around with shares on the Stock Exchange.
Toyota taking lead with low-cost, low-price vehicles
Check it out... apparently this program was in full force between 2001 and 2006... If you had a SMALL BUSINESS and bought a Hummer or some huge gaz-guzzling TRUCK like the Ford/GM/whatevers, you got a tax break. In Canada, in the last March budget, people who bought low-consumption vehicles were promised a tax rebate... Yeah... but it took about six long months for the forms to appear on the internet and a lot of pressure to get your ''promised'' rebate (courtesy of some govermint whatever based in Calgary) ... Be patient, very patient ... Posted 14/01/08 at 11:58 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .
Rush Gives Up?
Today's video: Huckabee sucks up to the teachers' union. ... 11:54 P.M. ___________________________ The GOP's fake immigration tough guys: Mark Krikorian cracks Giuliani's code on immigration. It seems Giuliani wants to stop illegal immigrants at the border but resists "internal" enforcement--e.g., employer sanctions. I'm less gung ho about the need for "attrition" in the immigrant population than Krikorian is--but you do have to have "internal" enforcement to diminish the "jobs magnet," no? Unless, as Krikorian speculates regarding Giuliani, you only want control at the border as a political stunt to appease the 'yahoos' and pave the way for legalization. .... P.S.: Meanwhile, Krikorian realizes that Huckabee--who theoretically based his seemingly tough, "prevent amnesty" proposal on a Krikorian article--has no idea what his own plan is actually about.
2007’s HISTORY
Ellis Airport started a dispute with Jacksonville City Council. An airport overlay zone proposed by the Onslow County Planning and Development Department would have restricted certain types of building and development near the airport. The proposal met with furious opposition from residents in the area and after two heated public hearings, it was nixed by the county’s planning board. The decision not to go forward with an overlay zone opened the door for the commericial and heavier residential rezoning of more than 500 acres that the Board of Commissioners OK’d. The city, however, agreed in November to file suit against the county to stop the rezoning. The mayor and most members of that council are not returning to office this year. Some public officials have expressed a desire to try to resolve the matter out of court, but the issue is still hanging out there as we head into 2008.

Here are my random thoughts while I'm watching the VMA pre-show. Hopefully some of you are watching along and will post your comments too... 7:17: Glad Nick Lachey decided to get dressed up with his Hanes undershirt. (Is he the newest celeb in those "Look who we got our Hanes on now" ads?) But with those baby blues, does it even matter what he's wearing? Not so much. 7:18: Kurt Lowder still works for MTV? Didn't he like found that channel or something? 7:24: Marilyn Monroe , Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera arrived! I love watching the girls try to get out of the superhigh SUVs in their tight dresses. Better them than me. 7:29: Jennifer Lopez looks like a mummy -- wrapped head to toe. Truth be told, she is so glam. I could never pull most of that off.
