Daily Briefing

Agency officials did not identify the companies but said the wide-ranging probe involves companies across the financial services industry.

Costs hammer Pilgrim's Pride

Pittsburg, Texas —- Chicken producer Pilgrim's Pride Corp. on Tuesday said its loss in the last three months of 2007 widened, largely due to soaring costs for grain that have hurt profits throughout the industry. The company reported a loss of $32.3 million, or 49 cents per share, for the October-December period, its fiscal first quarter, compared with a loss of $8.7 million, or 13 cents per share, a year earlier. Pilgrim's Pride said that excluding a change in Mexican tax law, its loss would have shrunk to 29 cents per share.

Earnings surge at Eli Lilly

Indianapolis —- Strong sales from several drugs helped Eli Lilly and Co.'s fourth-quarter profit surge more than sixfold from the last quarter of 2006.

On Your Mind

We see it as our tax money being spent to spruce things up. Thanks to all of you who choose to make the West End a better place. Many thanks to Jerry at the Sierra Service Center and D&M Tire and Wheel. I had a flat recently and was miles away from home. These two businesses had me on my way again within minutes and they were very courteous as well. Thanks again for this experience and the help that I received. To the person who complained about the block West End wall: get a grip. The West End is the first place people see traveling into what is now known as Sierra Vista. I think it deserves to have more money spent on it so we can all be proud of how it looks today and beyond. I think the rock wall looks great and I know everyone who comes into Sierra Vista from the post and everywhere else can appreciate how the city looks.I totally agree with the caller complaining about the lack of sales items at Fry’s and Safeway.

Snoqualmie Pass to remain closed until at least 9 a.m. Friday, with ...

Interstate 90 will remain closed over Snoqualmie Pass at least until 9 a.m. Friday, state transportation officials said today.

The pass has received five feet of snow in the past five days, outstripping crews' abilities to deal with avalanches — and two more feet of snow are predicted to fall by Friday evening.

"We're in a very active pattern, with a lot of fast-moving storms," said Dennis Damico of the National Weather Service. "This is a La Niña winter and a snowy time of year, but even for those conditions it has been very snowy."

Highway 2 across Stevens Pass was also closed by heavy snow this morning.

Eastern Washington has also been hit hard by the snow. Spokane, where schools were closed for a fourth straight day, had its deepest snow in more than a decade, with 20 inches recorded this morning.

Republican rivals open final assault in Florida

Look closely. Obama gets house for $300,000 below market value? How many people even have a house in America worth $300,000? He took this money from a slum lord that he himself has said is a friend of over 15 years, but somehow only performed 5 hours of work for during this time? The person is a known slumlord and influence peddler under indictment and is a recipient of over $43 million in taxpayer's dollars in Obama's area for repair of the slums of the poor. And Kennedy and Obama are supposed to be supporters of the poor. Kennedy is no supporter except of Kennedy. He is anti-everything that he could not have (real political power) and pro-anything he thinks he can stir up. Stirring up can be a good thing, I like change, but change to inexperience and a willing recipient of gold from the corrupt are not qualities of a President.

Irresponsible plan

U.S. politicians are clamoring to borrow more money to give to citizens to spend to avoid a recession. In the meantime the best use of that money would be by the citizens paying off their credit card and other debt.

The mad dash to avoid a recession by irresponsibly spending is nothing less than stupid. You wouldn't run your household or business finances that way and we citizens deserve better than this. After all won't such irresponsibility further weaken the U.S. dollar, increase the pressure on inflation and make us all worse off in the long run?
